Ben McKellar, aka The Ginger Chef, at Doctor's Orders with his gourmet sausage rolls

SussexFood invite staff and students to enter a prize draw, with the chance to win a meal for two at Brighton fine-dining restaurant, The Gingerman.

To enter, all staff and students have to do is buy one of the new “Gingerman-made” sausage rolls from SussexFood outlet, Doctor's Orders (situated in the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, BSMS), and then provide their name to the cashier to be included in a prize draw.

The renowned Gingerman restaurant on Norfolk Square is run by The Ginger Chef himself, Ben McKellar, who has since opened three more “Ginger”-inspired eateries in Sussex. The Gingerman remains the flagship however, being his first and now the most decorated, having won 2 AA rosettes, and entry into the Top 100 Restaurants in UK by Olive magazine, the Good Food Guide and Michelin Guide.

Ben McKellar’s rise to gastronomic fame began at Brighton’s City College, before he spent three years in Avignon, France, in Michelin Star restaurants alongside world-class chefs. He then worked at world-famous restaurants, L’Ortolan in Berkshire, and Park Bistro, NYC. In 1998, he returned to the UK and opened The Gingerman.

Ben is now also supporting SussexFood in a consultancy role, designing some recipes and sharing his expertise on local supply chains to enhance SussexFood’s local food repertoire.

The Ginger Chef said: “I’m bringing a little bit of the Brighton food scene to the University of Sussex, which in our case is to use the freshest, most seasonal ingredients and then not to muck about with them too much!

"What SussexFood are doing here is nothing sort of fantastic, particularly as they look to tap into the incredible Brighton food culture for the enjoyment of Sussex students and staff. I’m very proud to be involved.”

Ben’s first creation for SussexFood is his Gingerman Sausage Roll, a mix of pork meat, fennel seeds and apricots. Craig Ryder, Marketing & Communications Manager for SussexFood, says: "The tasty snack is the perfect 'to-go' winter-warmer and superb value at only £2.10."

Any purchase of the sausage roll at Doctor's Orders between Wednesday (22 October) and Tuesday 4 November will enter the buyer into the prize draw for a meal for two at The Gingerman.
