Awards for excellent teachers

Excellent teachers and teaching teams at Sussex have been recognised with Sussex Teaching Awards.
Students and staff were, in the summer term, invited to nominate for a teaching award exceptional individuals among established academics, those in the first five years of their careers and those who excel as part of a team. Members of staff in Professional Services were also eligible, if they teach as part of their job.
The winners are:
Business, Management and Economics
- Established staff: Chris Stratford.
- Early Career staff: Pascal Stiefenhofer
Brighton and Sussex Medical School
- Established staff: Juliet Wright.
- Early Career staff: Andrew Dilley.
- Team: Phase 1 Clinical Practice Team lead by Wesley Scott-Smith.
Education and Social Work
- Established staff: Michelle Lefevre and Robert Rosenthal.
- Early Career staff: Fi Branagh.
Engineering and Informatics
- Established staff: Nick Collins.
English
- Established staff: Melanie Green and Christian Uffmann.
Global Studies
- Team: The Anthropological Imagination Team: Maya Unnithan, Dimitris Dalakoglou, Martin Webb, Evropi Chatzipanagiotidou and Anna Stewart.
History, Art History and Philosophy
- Established staff: Claire Langhamer, Jarod Roll and Sarah Sawyer.
Institute of Development Studies (IDS)
- Established staff: Jethro Pettit.
- Early Career staff: Mark Davies.
IT Services and TLDU
- Team: Study Direct Team: Carol Shergold, Stuart Lamour, Paolo Oprandi, Mark Parsons and John Davies.
Law, Politics and Sociology
- Established staff: Daniel Hough.
- Early Career staff: Amy Busby.
Library
- Early Career staff: Helen Webb.
Life Sciences
- Established staff: Hazel Cox and Camilla Tornoe.
Mathematical and Physical Sciences
- Established staff: David Seery and Vanessa Styles.
Media, Film and Music
- Established staff: Mary Krell.
- Early Career staff: Paul McConnell and Monika Metykova.
Psychology
- Established staff: Robin Banerjee.
The nominations were judged against a range of criteria by the School Teaching and Learning Committees, whose recommendations were then agreed by the University Teaching and Learning Committee. The winners were all judged to excel in some or all of the following areas:
- challenging and inspiring teaching;
- innovation and interaction;
- support of student diversity;
- feedback to students;
- drawing on own research;
- enhancement of individual practice and support for colleagues.
