Not Eligible for Council Tax Exemption

The following students are not eligible for council tax reduction or exemption.

1. Part time students

2. Students on short courses (including some Sussex Centre for Language Studies SCLS)

It is unlikely that you will be able to claim Council Tax exemption as you are not on a continuous full time course.

We cannot give you a Council Tax Exemption Letter but we can give you a Confirmation of Student Status letter (a record of the course you are attending) which you can take to the council. The Council will then decide if you have pay the tax.

3. Postgraduate Taught Students who are awaiting results

Once postgraduate Taught Student have completed their study (usually in late September) they are no longer classed as students and therefore have to pay Council Tax.

4. Postgraduate Research Students not studying full-time

a) Students who have submitted their thesis usually have to pay

We cannot give you a Council Tax Exemption Letter but we can give you Confirmation of Student Status letter (which shows attendance dates and registration status) which you can take to the council. The Council will then decide if you have pay the tax.

b) Students in their writing up period may have to pay

We may be able give you a Council Tax Exemption Letter if you can prove you are working full time at writing up your thesis.
