Kai Ilchmann is part of the Associate Faculty of SPRU and has been part of the Harvard Sussex Program on Chemical and Biological Weapons (HSP) since 2004. Kai’s current research interests focus on the application of risk and threat assessment methodologies, especially as they are applied to questions around policy responses to biological and chemical weapons. His other research interest is in management and governance of technology and innovation, export controls, dual-use, organized violence, and emerging technologies. His previous work has included participation in a European Commission project assessing societal vulnerabilities to radiological, biological and chemical terrorism; and participation in a HSP led project on the role of Science and Technology reviews in the Biological Weapons Convention, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of the Global Uncertainties programme.

Kai grew up in Germany, lived, worked and studied in the UK for 15 years; worked for four years Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the Insitute of International Relations of PUC-Rio, and is now working in Germany. He is fluent in German, English and has a grasp of Portuguese.
