DIG-IT workshop: Inclusive Growth, Innovation and Technology: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

By bringing together scholars that have contributed to both sides--from a multitude of different disciplines--we aim to provide new sparks--and rigour--to the debate on how to achieve growth that is not only 'smart' but also 'inclusive'.

The DIG-IT workshop has now finished - thank you to all who attended.

On May 1-2 SPRU hosted a 2 day workshop on Innovation and Inclusive Growth. The workshop was organised by SPRU's new initiative called Dialog for Inclusive Growth, Innovation and Technology. Whereas in the past leading thinkers of innovation thought about the impacts on distribution and equity (from Ricardo's discussion of the effect of mechanisation on profits/wages to Chris Freeman's path-breaking work on innovation and employment), for too many decades the two have been separated. The workshop was a successful attempt to bring them back together, focussing on four key relationships:

  1. Innovation and inequality
  2. Measuring the inclusiveness of technological change
  3. Grassroots and social innovation
  4. Technology and development

The workshop, which was co-funded by the STEPS centre, and the European Commission's Innovation 4 Growth (i4g) group, is only the start of what we hope will be a fruitful series of events at SPRU on this subject.
