COVID-19: Sussexsport service updates

Service updates: Friday 17 July 2020

We're counting down!

We're excited to announce our plans to welcome you back, following the recent government advice that indoor fitness facilities can soon reopen.

The Falmer Sports Complex and Sport Centre will reopen from Tuesday 1 September, with some changes in place to ensure that you can have a safe and enjoyable experience when you see us again.

You can find out more information on our dedicated webpage.

We understand you will want to know what our closure period means for your membership and you may have lots of questions. Please read through the Frequently Asked Questions below, as we hope you will find the answer you need.

If you require further assistance we are still around to answer queries from Monday-Friday during office hours. Please email us and we will get back to you as quickly as possible, but please be aware that this may take a little longer than usual given the current circumstances.

We aim to provide regular service updates on our webpages and social media channels.

Please check our general service update page when you can to make sure you have the most up-to-date information. You can also keep in touch by following us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram, where we'll share our latest news with you.

Stay Home With US

We’re still around, but we’ve moved things online. So although you may not be able to be with us in person, our fantastic Sussexsport team is working hard to keep you motivated from afar.

We have a weekly timetable of exercise classes run by some familiar faces. You'll just need a Zoom account, registered to your Sussex email address (or BSMS and IDS), to get involved. If you're signing up for a Zoom account as a University of Sussex student, please register here.

You can also find fitness advice from our staff team, classes to watch on demand and hundreds of downloadable workouts to try out at home on our Stay Home With US webpage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen to my membership?

While both of our sport facilities are closed, we are regrettably not in a position to process any membership refunds or extension requests. This will be a priority for us as soon as we reopen on Tuesday 1 September.

When we reopen we will be able to access our customer information so that we can look at your membership and advise on refunds or extensions.

If you are returning to Sussex in September, we hope to be able to offer you a discount on your new membership that will be a pro rata equivalent of your unused membership costs during our closure time.

If you are not returning to Sussex in September, and therefore not eligible for a discount on a new membership, we hope to offer you a pro rata refund based on your membership type.

When will you reopen?

We will reopen both sites on Tuesday 1 September. You can find out more information on our dedicated webpage.

Please remember to check your emails, as this is the best way for us to contact you directly. If you think we may not have an email address for you, or if you would like to update us with a different email address, let us know.

We will endevour to update our webpages and social media channels regularly. If you don't already do so, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and make sure you bookmark our website.

Will you be moving some Sussexsport activities online?

Yes, we have a weekly timetable of online classes run by some of our popular Sussexsport instructors, so you can still workout with a familiar face! These are open to everyone in our campus community and we encourage you to get involved - you just need a Sussex, BSMS or IDS email to login.

If you miss a class, don't worry. We'll be recording some of our sessions and you can watch these at a time to suit you, either on Zoom via the On Demand section of our webpages or on Facebook and YouTube, so you can workout at a convenient time for you.

Our Fitness Team are producing regular video tutorials and articles to help keep you fit and well at home, too. You can read these on our Medium page.

We've also partnered with Life Fitness, who have provided us with hundreds of online workouts that you can do at a time to suit you. Watch and download at any time

During this time it is so important to keep active for your physical and mental health, and we want to make sure we can help you.

For now, running, cycling and walking outside are all good ways to maintain physical activity so long as you practice social distancing. This is, of course, subject to change so please make sure you always follow the latest guidelines from the government and World Health Organisation.

The charity MIND also have some excellent advice on coronavirus and your wellbeing.

Is Active US still running?

All of our Active US sessions are cancelled until further notice, including our off-campus Bouldering sessions.

We'll be keeping in touch with students on our social media channels during this time, so please make sure you follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
