Apply for Sussexsport's Sussex This Girl Can Leadership Academy

Building on our campus-wide Sussex This Girl Can campaign, we're excited to launch our Sussex This Girl Can Leadership Academy (STGCLA) in the autumn term.

Following a 2018 report by Women in Sport showing that women are under-represented in senior leadership roles and on Boards in the sport sector, our Leadership Academy aims to provide students at Sussex with opportunities that will improve their future employability skills and provide key training to help gain leadership roles in the future.

We have spaces for eight student volunteers on the STGCLA, selected by application and interview. Places are open to students at Sussex and, if selected, you will need to be able to commit time (approximately two hours per week during term time and more during Sussex This Girl Can Week) to training opportunities and to support Sussexsport’s ever-growing Sussex This Girl Can campaign, which aims to increase female participation in fitness, sport and wellbeing activities on campus.

You will also act as a Sussex This Girl Can brand ambassador and receive training for this aspect of the role, which will involve creating blog and video content throughout the year for Sussexsport and Active US social media channels. As part of the volunteer position you will also be expected to:

  • Help deliver activities for women at Sussex
  • Obtain feedback from peers about sport at Sussex
  • Use your own social channels to raise the profile and engagement of women in sport at Sussex
  • Provide feedback to Sussexsport about improving the women’s fitness, sport and wellbeing offer at Sussex and shape future development decisions.

In return, Sussexsport will provide you with:

  • Training opportunities including the opportunity to feedback on Active US training
  • STGCLA kit
  • Access to sport sessions including Active US sessions and Sussexsport facilities
  • Mentoring
  • Networking opportunities at local conferences.

Our Sussex This Girl Can campaign aims to raise engagement levels in fitness, sport and wellbeing activities amongst all self-identifying women, transgender and non-binary students and staff at Sussex.

To apply, please fill in our short application by midnight Monday 15 October. We will contact applicants selected for interview shortly after this date. If you have any questions, please contact Marc Slowey, Participation Coordinator, via email:

This year’s Sussex This Girl Can Week will take place from 19-25 November and promises to be our biggest week yet! More information will be released shortly; follow Sussexsport’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to get the latest news.
