Staff are invited to go the distance for Commit to Go Far this January

Can you go the distance and 'cross the country' in our post-Christmas challenge for staff?

Given that Tokyo 2020 is only months away, we have an Olympic-inspired distance challenge to help get you active this January.

Sign up as a team or individually to get moving and complete 881 'miles' of activity by following a virtual route across Great Britain.

The challenge will take you on a virtual tour through the hometowns of some of the most well-known and decorated GB Olympians, as well as some of the lesser known Olympians that have competed over the years.

On the way, there will be an additional activity decathlon that will challenge you to try 10 activities, some familiar and some more unusual, to help you to clock up those all important 'miles'.

And to give you even more support as you 'travel' across Britain, we're also providing University of Sussex staff with a free 10-day Sussexsport membership from Monday 13 January - Wednesday 22 January inclusive.

So get those valuable 'miles' in by visiting our fitness rooms, trying some group exercise classes, playing a game of badminton, squash or tennis or going for a swim.

The distance you cover will be calculated according to activity: cycling (including indoor cycling), walking, running and rowing all count as actual mileage to the challenge, so keep track of all your movement; we can recommend lots of good apps!

Any other activities will get you or your team one mile for every 15 minutes of activity, so an hour of yoga, Zumba, swimming, badminton etc. will give you four miles.

How you get the miles in is up to you, but make sure to include all the activity that you complete throughout the challenge. Whether it's a cycle at the weekend or walking the dog, everything counts!

Take on the challenge as an individual or share the distance by forming a team with colleagues, either in your department or across campus. No minimum or maximum numbers of people are required per team and there’s no time limit to complete the challenge, so set yourself a time and pace that challenges and motivates you.

Remember, Sussexsport staff will be around to help so please chat to our friendly team at any point for tips, ideas and ways to stay motivated.

You'll receive a poster map showing the route of the challenge and the key destinations along the way to pin up at home or in your office, so you can visualise your progress. When you reach an Olympian landmark on the poster, you'll need to work out which athlete hails from the location using our clues.

Make sure to share your progress with us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram using the hashtag #CommitToGetFar!

To take part in the challenge:

  • Sign up by emailing Sam Fuller (s.n.fuller@sussex.ac.uk)
  • Sam will email you a team sheet, which you should fill in and return to her
  • If you would like a 10-day FREE Commit To Go Far membership, please return your team sheet as soon as possible. Membership will expire at close of day on Wednesday 22 January, so the sooner you have your membership the more time you will have to use it
  • Membership gives you full access to both fitness rooms at the Sport Centre and Falmer Sports Complex; allows you to book onto our group exercise classes (subject to availability); and lets you book out our badminton, tennis and squash courts and table-tennis tables.
