Can you go the distance and get from Land's End to John O'Groats in our post-Christmas challenge? Our virtual route covers 900 miles and will see you 'travel' from Land's End, the most south-westerly position of Britain, to John O’Groats - the most north-east position in Scotland.
In Sussexsport we are inviting staff to go on a virtual journey of the UK’s most iconic point-to-point challenge for 2017's Commit to Get Far. Our annual distance-based event starts on Wednesday 18 January and is a great way to kick off your new year health and fitness goals.
Your challenge is to traverse the route by covering 'miles' collected by getting active, clocking up the distance to 'visit' the destinations on the map. The journey starts at Land's End and moves across the UK, passing through major cities, national parks and iconic attractions and totaling a whopping 900 miles.
Take on the challenge as an individual, or share the miles by forming a team with colleagues - either in your department or across campus. No minimum or maximum numbers of people are required per team.
The number of 'miles' you cover will be calculated according to activity; cycling (including indoor cycling classes); walking; rowing and running count as actual mileage to the challenge, so keep track of everything you do - we can recommend lots of good apps! Any other activities will get you or your team one mile for every 15 minutes of activity, so an hour of yoga, Zumba, swimming, badminton, etc. will give you four miles.
How you get the miles in is up to you, but make sure to include all the activity that you complete throughout the challenge; whether it's a cycle at the weekend or walking the dog, everything counts!
To support you, we will be giving all participants 10 days of free Sussexsport membership between 18 January-27 January. So get those valuable travel miles in by trying some group exercise classes, using the fitness rooms or playing a game of badminton or squash. And look out for special sessions that we'll be putting on over the 10 days.
Participants will receive a poster map showing the route of the challenge and the key destinations along the way. When you or your team reaches a destination, you'll receive a postcard that you can fix to the map to keep track of your progress.
In previous years Commit to Get Far has been a 10-day event, but this year it’s only the start of the challenge. We want you to make activity part of every week from the start of the journey. Set a goal of weeks, months or even the whole year to complete the distance and challenge each other or yourself to reach John O'Groats - the final destination - through 900 miles of activity. We'll be on hand near the finish line to provide lots of ideas about how you can commit to go further and continue to increase your health and fitness goals across the year.
For updates on special sessions and for more information, check our Commit to Get Far webpage and follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
The deadline for entries is Wednesday 11 January 2017. To register for the challenge, contact Sam Fuller: s.n.fuller@sussex.ac.uk.
