More than 75 people took part in Sussexsport’s football tournament on Saturday (28 April), raising hundreds of pounds for a local charity.
The sun was shining for the popular annual event, which attracts staff, students and members of the local community – all donning their football boots to raise money for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity.
Eight teams took part in the event, including staff and students from the University’s Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and campus Co-op, alongside visitors from AMEX and Montpelier Football Club.
Fuelled by generous donations of refreshments from the Co-op, the players took part in a knock-out tournament with the opportunity to raise even more funds for charity with a half-time penalty shoot-out competition.
Those taking part also got to try out Sussexsport’s new Fairtrade footballs. Manufactured by Bala Sport, Sussexsport is hoping to introduce the Fairtrade balls to regular stock for their Active US sessions in the next academic year.
IDS and Amex made it to the final of the tournament and, after a hard fought contest, AMEX were victorious – winning a Zorball session courtesy of Sussexsport and Active US.
The event raised more than £250 for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity and Sussexsport Duty Manager Ben Ospalak is already making plans for the next tournament.
Ben said: “This year’s charity tournament was another fantastic day, with teams getting into the charity spirit and raising much needed funds for local charity, Rockinghorse. It was great to highlight the importance of Fairtrade too, with ethical refreshments from the campus Co-op and our new footballs from Bala Sport.
“We had a real mix of people take part in the tournament, which is always played in an atmosphere of fun and friendliness. It was great to welcome groups from the local community onto campus once again and congratulations to Team AMEX on a well-deserved victory!”
