New fitness equipment to be installed in campus gyms

These exercise bikes in the Falmer Sports Complex will be replaced with new equipment, including the latest CV machines.

New equipment is to be installed in the fitness rooms on campus, Sussexsport has announced.

The fitness rooms at the Falmer Sports Complex (FSC) are to have new equipment throughout, including the latest cardiovascular (CV) machines (with the latest audiovisual technology) and resistance kit as well as free weights.

The Sport Centre fitness room will also have new CV equipment, with access to the latest audiovisual technology, as well as a range of resistance equipment - making it more like the FSC facility. (Unfortunately it is not possible to have running treadmills in the Sport Centre because the floor in this building is not strong enough.)

Simon Tunley, Deputy Head of Sport, says: “We are really excited about the project and hope that our members will very much enjoy the improvements at both sites.

“They will have more choice about where to work out as the equipment will be virtually the same, whichever of the two venues they use.”

As part of the instalment, both fitness facilities will need to close to allow the old equipment to be removed for resale, certain areas to be painted, new flooring to be installed and cabling to be laid for AV purposes.

The refit is likely to take about a week and is scheduled for some time between mid August and mid September. “The exact dates will be publicised widely to ensure the impact is as minimal as possible to all users,” says Simon.

Both facilities will re-open in time for the start of term on Monday 16 September.

In a separate development, the changing rooms in the Sport Centre are also being upgraded. The changing rooms by hall 2 are now open following a major refurbishment; and redecoration of the women’s changing rooms next to hall 1 is due to be finished by Monday (29 July), with the men’s changing rooms expected to open a few days later.

Simon says: “We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but we do hope users will appreciate the betterment of both areas.”
