Courses programme

Our successful courses programme brings you quality and diversity every term with courses ranging from trapeze to salsa, hatha yoga and Pilates.

If you want to improve your racket skills, get fitter, improve well being or learn how to dance then we have it covered and if there is something you want to see on the programme then we will try and meet your request.

All courses must be booked and paid for in advance which can be done at either the Sport Centre or Falmer Sports Complex reception or over the telephone using your debit/credit card.

Course notes

  • Drop-in sessions are not offered on courses.
  • Courses will be cancelled if there are insufficient numbers, so please book in advance to ensure that the course you are interested in runs.
  • Once you are signed onto a course, please come to reception before each session and ensure that your name is ticked off the course register.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and if you have any injuries or problems then discuss these with the instructor before the class.
  • Do not arrive late for a course as the warm up is a vital part of the session and helps prevent injury.
  • We ensure that all teachers are fully qualified and experienced. However, all participants take part in any activity at their own risk.

Course descriptions

Yoga

Classic yoga

Level 1 is for beginners and level 2 is for those with experience. A complete system of health and fitness for mind, body and spirit with deep relaxation, breathing, stretching, balance and inverted posture exercises.

Hatha yoga

Level 1 is for beginners, level 2 for those with some experience. A class incorporating classical yoga postures, breathing techniques and relaxation to aid total well being, inner peace and mental clarity.

Dynamic yoga

Based on flowing sequences and precise alignment, linked to full rhythmic breathing that will open up both body and mind. This class will improve your strength, stamina and flexibility.

Dance

Ballet – level 1

This class includes basic components of ballet technique for co-ordination and suppleness incorporated into short dances.

Ballet – level 2

As ballet level 1 class, but suitable for those with previous ballet experience or at least one term of general ballet.

Ballet – level 3

Furthering traditional technique, covering vocabulary and qualities of ballet, where basics are known.

Ballet – General

Suitable for all levels. Beginners are welcome. This is a general ballet class which incorporates point work at the end of each session.

Contemporary dance

A genre of concert dance that employs systems/methods found in modern and postmodern dance and classical ballet. Drawing on modern dance techniques and newer philosophies of movement that depart from classical techniques by altogether omitting structured form/movement.

Salsa

Danced in couples or groups to Salsa music (plus Cha Cha, Merengue and Samba). Excellent exercise with special emphasis on the waist and hips.

Swing

Lindy Hop is the earliest form of Swing Jive. It can be danced to almost every style of music and has an emphasis on improvisation. Other Swing era dances include Charleston, Shag, Balboa and Blues.

West African Dance

Learn West African dance with Ernest Kwame Obeng. This class is energising, motivating and joyous. All levels welcome.

Rackets

 

Badminton Beginners

Learn rules, basic grips and hitting techniques, practice to improve stroke execution, and singles and doubles tactics and strategy.

 

Badminton Intermediates

Learn consolidation of grips and hitting techniques, concentrated practice to improve stroke execution, doubles/singles strategy and tactics, advanced body skill exercises and mixed doubles strategy.

 

Squash – juniors (open to all abilities)

For ages 7-15 years and includes mini squash awards.

Miscellaneous

Acrobalance

Develop your strength and stamina as you learn to base and fly. Mainly working in pairs and trios, acrobalance is the art of both static and dynamic lifts. An exciting, fun, accessible to all class whilst being a great workout.

Pilates

Mat-based pilates focuses on improving flexibility and strength for the total body. Slow, controlled movements for maximum effect and relaxation.

 

Trapeze

You will learn skills on the trapeze, rope and silk with qualified aerial practitioners and in a supportive environment. A great way to keep fit, develop strength and de-stress while having loads of fun. Improvers course for those with experience.

Weight Management

Weight management programme with weekly themed sessions, weigh-ins and top tips, as well as individual and group support.

If you find you have a lecture or commitment that clashes with any course that you have signed up for, we will give you a full refund providing you let us know at least 24 hours before the course commences.
