What classes can I do?

Our group exercise programme is designed to allow you to find the perfect workout to suit your goals.

We take pride in being able to provide one of the largest and most diverse group exercise programmes in the south east. Quality instruction and teaching is at the heart of every class and you'll benefit from the energy that group training brings. We believe we have a group exercise class for everyone.

Are classes included in membership?

All of our classes are free with Gold and Silver Sussexsport membership. If you're a Bronze member or a non-member, you can pay per class. Download our price list for pay-and-play options: Price list 2018-2019 [PDF 73.54KB].

Can I book online?

Yes, all of our classes can be booked online or in person or by phone at the reception desks at the Sport Centre and Falmer Sports Complex.

Monday

Dynamic Yoga: 8am-8.45am

Instructor: Gratia

Venue: Dance Studio - Sport Centre

Based on flowing sequences and precise alignment, linked to full rhythmic breathing that will open up both body and mind. This class will improve your strength, stamina and flexibility.

Aerial Yoga: 10.45am-11.45am

Instructor: Abi

Venue: Dance Studio - Sport Centre 

Move between yoga postures using a low-hanging wide aerial silk, hung like a hammock, to give flowing movements that relax and stretch the body. 

Long sleeves and long trousers recommended wear, but not essential. Please wear clothing with no zips or buckles, and remove watches and jewellery prior to each class.

Bodyweight Conditioning: 12 noon-1pm

Instructor: Henry

Venue: Dance Studio - Sport Centre 

This class focuses on mastery of your body weight. Primarily drawing on gymnastics conditioning and animal flow techniques we will help to strengthen and condition your body (especially your core), improve mobility and flexibility and teach you progressions toward some fun new moves such as handstand, headstand and planche. All levels are welcome regardless of any previous experience.

Bounce is a brand new high energy, fun and effective class for  everyone dance/fitness class. The class has a commercial Pop/R&B root and the choreography is fun and easy to follow, combining the latest hip-hop and chart hits. Dance styles include Hip-Hop, Waacking, House and Vogue.

Women-only Circuits: 2.30pm-3.30pm

Venue: Sport Centre Fitness Room

A women-only session for all experience levels. This class also runs on Thursdays from 2.30pm-3.30pm. Sessions will be led by expert female instructors and structured around the needs of the group, with a focus on circuits training and/or spin workouts. Classes may include:

  • Kettlebells
  • Body weight
  • Full body workout
  • Spin workout using our indoor cycling bikes

This is a much more movement based/demanding class for those that enjoy the core elements of Pilates but want a greater workout.

HIT: 5.05pm-5.50pm

Venue: Hall Two - Sport Centre

This class is suitable for all fitness levels. You start the class with a short step routine designed to warm up the muscles you will be using during the class. The rest of the session is split into 4 x 4 strength exercises using bodyweight and dumbells. You will work the lower body, upper body, whole body and core. The method of training creates a high intensity, high energy, high calorie burn.

A one hour session that focuses on all over body workout. This class is aimed to get you stronger, leaner, help you burn more calories and is guaranteed to leave you feeling like you have had a good session! The class is aimed at all levels from the beginner through to the advanced trainer.

PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga.  We crank up the speed to deliver a true fat-burning, low-impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean, and incredibly defined.

This new gym-based session is designed for people who have never lifted weights, those that need some guidance or for people who might have been away from the gym for a while. The class will provide a workout and the small group aspect will allow time for coaching and feedback.

A class centred on strength training to produce a high intensity class that trains both the muscular and cardiovascular system to create a smart training solution. The class uses a rotation system, so the user can record their progress. The class uses barbells, dumbbells, ropes, kettlebells and medicine balls and requires some experience of free weight training. The class is a great calorie burner, great fun and is a challenging workout.

Strong by Zumba: 5.05pm-5.50pm

Strong by Zumba is the ultimate cardio and total body workout, based around the extremely popular training videos by Shaun T.

The session is high intensity and fast paced, using intervals to burn energy and increase fitness. Using jumps, sprints, strength and core exercises this class should be top of your list if intensity is your thing.

Venue: Outdoor fitness area - Falmer Sports Complex

Join Henry Johnson for a new class using our exciting new Outdoor Fitness area at the Falmer Sports Complex. The space was built in July 2017 with the support of the Sussex Fund, through generous donations from alumni and friends of the University.

Get tips and advice while trying out the Outdoor Fitness facilities in a fun class that uses bodyweight and calisthenics based exercises. The 45-minute class is designed to show you how to use and maximise the area, as well as providing you with a whole body workout. Henry will take you through the basics of bodyweight training and show you the initial progressions for certain exercises.

Group exerise class notes

  • If you have booked your place online then you will still need to come to reception to pick up your ticket or pay.
  • If you have booked your place online and fail to attend/pay/pick up your ticket then arrears will show on your account and you will be unable to carry out any other bookings until these arrears have been paid.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and if you have any injuries or problems then discuss these with the instructor before the class.
  • Please do not arrive late for any of the classes. Entry will be denied if you are more than 10 minutes late.
  • We ensure that all teachers are fully qualified and experienced. However, all participants take part in any activity at their own risk.

Off campus yoga classes

  • These classes can be booked online, in person at either the Sport Centre or Falmer Sports Complex reception or by phone calling either 01273   678228 or 877125.
  • These classes are only open to gold and silver members only.
  • Bookings for these classes will cease 30 minutes before the class. Please do not attempt to join these classes if you haven't already booked a place.
  • You will need to bring your student or staff ID card with you when attending these classes.

Waiting Lists

If a class is fully booked you have the option of going on the waiting list; just ask at either the Sport Centre or Falmer Sports Complex reception. Sussexsport will attempt to contact you if a place becomes available. Please note that being on a waiting list does not guarantee you a place, but is to note your interest in case a place becomes available.
