What classes can I do?

Our group exercise programme is designed to allow you to find the perfect workout to suit your goals.

We take pride in being able to provide one of the largest and most diverse group exercise programmes in the south east. Quality instruction and teaching is at the heart of every class and you'll benefit from the energy that group training brings. We believe we have a group exercise class for everyone.

Are classes included in membership?

All of our in-person classes are free with Gold and Silver Sussexsport membership. If you're a Bronze member or a non-member, you can pay per class. Download our price list for pay-and-play options: Sussexsport Price List 2020 [PDF 89.26KB].

Can I book online?

Yes, all of our classes must be booked in advance and you can book your place online, by phone or in person at the reception desks at the Sport Centre and Falmer Sports Complex.

As we reopen our facilities from Tuesday 1 September, we will start to reintroduce and grow our group exercise programme. Initially we are starting with a small programme, as we welcome you back, but we will look to bring back a full schedule of our popular classes as soon as we can.

Monday

ONLINE Traditional Pilates: 11am

 Keiran's traditional Pilates session will provide an all over body workout!

Indoor Group Cycling: 12.05pm-12.50pm

Venue: Sport Centre Fitness Room

Cycle to the beat of the music or speed through challenging intervals. This high intensity class will help you burn calories, energise the body and is suitable for all abilities.

If you are new to indoor group cycling please read the Schwinn bike set up information first.

RowHIT: 12.15pm-1pm

Instructor: Fitness Team

Venue: Falmer Sports Complex

RowHIT is a 45 minute class of full-intensity interval training. We aim to have a balance of floor exercises mixed with the rower. Our classes aim to work every major muscle group and will be for users of all levels of fitness. The class is perfect for those that want to have the confidence that the instructor can really concentrate on your personal form as it is a small group class with plenty of space for each person. The view will also help to keep spirits high as you can look over the South downs from our clubhouse room.

Based on flowing sequences and precise alignment, linked to full rhythmic breathing that will open up both body and mind. This class will improve your strength, stamina and flexibility.

ONLINE PiYo: 5pm-5.45pm

Gemma May's popular PiYo class will keep you flexible and give you a good workout at the same time.

A one hour session that focuses on all over body workout. This class is aimed to get you stronger, leaner, help you burn more calories and is guaranteed to leave you feeling like you have had a good session! The class is aimed at all levels from the beginner through to the advanced trainer.

ONLINE Morning Yoga Flow: 8am-9am

Durgha is a member of the Business School team and is offering yoga classes for Sussex staff. This morning yoga flow session will help you wake up your body and mind to feel energised for the day ahead.

Email Durgha Ramji to be added to the MS Teams Group where the Zoom links will be shared.

PiYo: 12.10pm-12.50pm

PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. And we crank up the speed to deliver a true fat-burning, low-impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean and incredibly defined.

Ria's CardioBox class is a combination of martial arts and an aerobic workout that promises to get you moving!

Steve's popular Strength and Conditioning workout, transported out of our gym and into your home.

HIT (Bodyweight): 5.10pm-6pm

Venue: Sport Centre - Hall Two

This class is suitable for all fitness levels. You start the class with a short step routine designed to warm up the muscles you will be using during the class. The rest of the session is split into 4 x 4 strength exercises using bodyweight and dumbells. You will work the lower body, upper body, whole body and core. The method of training creates a high intensity, high energy, high calorie burn.

Just as it suggests, a smaller group version of the regular Sussexsport circuit class, with a focus on blocks on strength work and conditioning in an exclusive safe distanced space with coaching and motivation. This new class is perfect to compliment the gym work that members are doing.

This outdoor fitness class is a small group outside class using your own station, no sharing of kit. A combination of strength and conditioning exercises that results in a varied high intensity session.

Learn the basics of the game and casual play. Learn the essential shots of the game and positional sense. Players will stay on a court of 5 players and there will be no movement to other courts.

Do not exercise if you’re injured or feeling unwell, please consult your doctor first. Logging into this class is solely at your own risk and any injuries occurred are your own responsibility.

Group exercise class notes

  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and if you have any injuries or problems please discuss these with the instructor before the class
  • Please do not arrive late for any of the classes. Entry will be denied if you are more than 10 minutes late
  • We ensure that all teachers are fully qualified and experienced. However, all participants take part in any activity at their own risk.

How to book onto an online class:

  • First, you'll need to sign up to Zoom using your Sussex email. We can only authorise class entry via your University of Sussex email (including BSMS and IDS email addresses), so please register here using your University email address
  • You'll need to have an account and be logged in and ready before the class starts - so leave yourself plenty of time; online classes will be locked 5 minutes after the start time of the class
  • Join a class using the meeting ID for the session you want to participate in. You may need to download some add-ons, but you should only need to do this once if using the same device each time
  • You should now be able to see 'Please wait for your host to start the meeting'. You can test your audio at this point
  • Zoom will ask you to choose audio on/video on. If you have to click, choose audio on to access the meeting. Please turn this off once you are in the class, or others will be able to hear you
  • Answer the simple screening questions
  • You're in and the class will begin: let's get active!

Waiting Lists

If a class is fully booked you have the option of going on the waiting list, just ask at either the Sport Centre or Falmer Sports Complex reception. We will attempt to contact you if a place becomes available. Please note that being on a waiting list does not guarantee you a place, but is to note your interest in case a place becomes available.
