What classes can I do?

Our group exercise programme is designed to allow you to find the perfect workout to suit your goals.

We take pride in being able to provide one of the largest and most diverse group exercise programmes in the south east. Quality instruction and teaching is at the heart of every class and you'll benefit from the energy that group training brings. We believe we have a group exercise class for everyone.

Are classes included in membership?

All of our classes are free with Gold and Silver Sussexsport membership. If you're a Bronze member or a non-member, you can pay per class. Download our price list for pay-and-play options: Price list 2019-2020 [PDF 73.54KB].

Can I book online?

Yes, all of our classes can be booked online or in person or by phone at the reception desks at the Sport Centre and Falmer Sports Complex.

Monday

Aerial Yoga: 10.45am-11.45am

Instructor: Abi

Venue: Dance Studio - Sport Centre

Move between yoga postures using a low-hanging wide aerial silk, hung like a hammock, to give flowing movements that relax and stretch the body.

Long sleeves and long trousers recommended wear, but not essential. Please wear clothing with no zips or buckles, and remove watches and jewellery prior to each class.

Bodyweight Conditioning: 12 noon-12.50pm

Venue: Dance Studio - Sport Centre 

This class focuses on mastery of your body weight. Primarily drawing on gymnastics conditioning and animal flow techniques we will help to strengthen and condition your body (especially your core), improve mobility and flexibility and teach you progressions toward some fun new moves such as handstand, headstand and planche. All levels are welcome regardless of any previous experience.

Indoor Group Cycling: 12.05pm-12.50pm

Cycle to the beat of the music or speed through challenging intervals. This high intensity class will help you burn calories, energise the body and is suitable for all abilities.

Yoga: 1pm-2pm

Venue: Dance Studio - Sport Centre

A combination of postures and stretches to increase flexibility, encourage proper alignment of the body and develop balance and strength. Different levels and abilities are catered for. This is a relaxing class which will leave you refreshed for the week ahead.

Circuits: 6pm-7pm

Venue: Hall One or Two - Sport Centre

A one hour session that focuses on all over body workout. This class is aimed to get you stronger, leaner, help you burn more calories and is guaranteed to leave you feeling like you have had a good session! The class is aimed at all levels from the beginner through to the advanced trainer.

Dynamic Pilates: 6pm-7pm

This is a much more movement based/demanding class for those that enjoy the core elements of Pilates but want a greater workout.

PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. And we crank up the speed to deliver a true fat-burning, low-impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean and incredibly defined.

Mat-based Pilates focusing on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body. Slow, controlled movements for maximum effect and relaxation. This class is suitable for beginners and improvers.

Trapeze (improvers): 3pm-4pm

You will learn skills on the trapeze, rope and silk with a qualified aerial practitioner and in a supportive environment.

Venue: Falmer Sports Complex Training Room 2 

A class centred on strength training to produce a high intensity class that trains both the muscular and cardiovascular system to create a smart training solution. The class uses a rotation system, so the user can record their progress. The class uses barbells, dumbbells, ropes, kettlebells and medicine balls and requires some experience of free weight training. The class is a great calorie burner, great fun and is a challenging workout.

Zumba Strong: 5.05pm-5.50pm

Venue: Hall Two - Sport Centre

This ultimate cardio and total body workout is based around the extremely popular training videos by Shaun T. The workout is high intensity and fast paced using intervals to burn energy and increase fitness. Using jumps, sprints, strength and core exercises this class should be top of your list if intensity is your thing.

Flexibility and Stability: 5.30pm-6.30pm

Back and shoulders flexibility. In this class we will help create space, length and strength throughout the spine and shoulders to efficiently support your body for health, performance and injury prevention. From total beginners to advanced - tailored to individual bodies.

Venue: Hall Two - Sport Centre

This class is suitable for all fitness levels. You start the class with a short step routine designed to warm up the muscles you will be using during the class. The rest of the session is split into 4 x 4 strength exercises using bodyweight and dumbells. You will work the lower body, upper body, whole body and core. The method of training creates a high intensity, high energy, high calorie burn.

Boxercise: 6pm-7pm

Boxercise is the best stress buster around! It is considered one of the most effective forms of cross-training available. Boxercise combines a cardio workout with a conditioning workout, stimulsting all muscle groups to help you increase your fitness and stamina, lose weight and tone up all at the same time; making it one of the most fun and effective ways to exercise.

Thursday

Outdoor Fitness: 12 noon-1pm

Venue: Outdoor fitness area - Falmer Sports Complex

Join Henry for a new class using our exciting new Outdoor Fitness area at the Falmer Sports Complex. The space was built in July 2017 with the support of The Sussex Fund, through generous donations from alumni and friends of the University.

Get tips and advice while trying out the Outdoor Fitness facilities in a fun class that uses bodyweight and calisthenics based exercises. The 45 minute class is designed to show you how to use and maximise the area, as well as providing you with a whole body workout. Henry will take you through the basics of bodyweight training and show you the initial progressions for certain exercises.

Sussexsport Bootcamp: 5pm-6pm

Venue: Falmer Sports Complex Outdoor Fitness

Sussexsport fitness boot camp is a type of group physical training program with functional training which prepares the body for real-world activities. These classes are designed to build strength and fitness through a variety of types of exercise. Boot camp training will commence with dynamic stretching and running, followed by a wide variety of interval training, including callisthenic exercises, lifting weights/objects, pulling/carrying weights/objects, pushups/sit-ups, plyometric, and various types of intense explosive routines. The fun element of group training will be targeted. Each program will finish with a stretching session where we will be open to questions on nutritional tips and advice.

Group exerise class notes

  • If you have booked your place online then you will still need to come to reception to pick up your ticket or pay.
  • If you have booked your place online and fail to attend/pay/pick up your ticket then arrears will show on your account and you will be unable to carry out any other bookings until these arrears have been paid.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and if you have any injuries or problems then discuss these with the instructor before the class.
  • Please do not arrive late for any of the classes. Entry will be denied if you are more than 10 minutes late.
  • We ensure that all teachers are fully qualified and experienced. However, all participants take part in any activity at their own risk.

Waiting Lists

If a class is fully booked you have the option of going on the waiting list; just ask at either the Sport Centre or Falmer Sports Complex reception. Sussexsport will attempt to contact you if a place becomes available. Please note that being on a waiting list does not guarantee you a place, but is to note your interest in case a place becomes available.
