Sports bursaries are offered to talented students who have reached national standard in their chosen sport.
"The sport bursary scheme at Sussex helped with the cross over between sport and study, offering motivation and ensuring I was able to achieve in both. The comprehensive support package given to me allowed me to aim for the skies in my pursuit of Olympic gold." David Stone MBE, Paralympic cyclist
Students will receive access to a comprehensive support package including:
- Free use of facilities
- Fitness testing
- Fitness programmes
- Sports injury support
- Sport science services
- Links to external clubs
- Student mentoring
- Financial support
- Academic flexibility
- Car parking privileges
Bursary status will only normally be given to athletes from Sport England-recognised sports. However, in exceptional circumstances, athletes from clubs recognised by the Sports Federation may also be provided with bursaries.
Here's what some previous recipients think of the bursary scheme:
"I play Ultimate Frisbee for the Mohawks, the University team, and it's been a fantastic way to meet people.
"The coaching and support I received from the Mohawks enabled me to apply to, and become a member of, the GB Under 23 Mixed team, which won the World Championships in Florence [in 2010].
"Without the support of the University, the Students' Union and the sports bursary I received, none of this would have been possible."
Nick White, Gold medallist, Under 23 Ultimate Frisbee Mixed World Championships 2010
"My time at Sussex hasn't just been about books and conferences. It's also been about making friends and having fun - and the University has plenty of options.
"In my case, sports have always played a very important part. I've been the captain of the men's volleyball team since I started my degree, which has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people the world over, travel throughout the UK and compete against other universities. When the sun shines it's time to hit Brighton beach and play some volleyball!
"Our team currently plays in the First Division of the South East Conference, and last year I took part in the Volleyball England Beach Tour, coming 5th at the national finals at Blackpool.
"It's all been possible thanks to the great support we've received from the Students' Union and the University itself. Last year I was granted a sports bursary that has not only helped with training, but also with speeding up my recovery after a knee injury."
Adrian Duhalt, PhD student in Geography
