Healthy campus

What is Healthy Campus?

Healthy Campus is a university wide initiative organised, developed and contributed to by over 15 areas on campus to encourage both staff and students to improve and maintain a positive state of health and well being. We aim to promote some of the many opportunities already available to staff and students on the campus, as well as provide opportunities to experience new activities at regular intervals throughout the year.

Healthy Campus not only focuses on physical health, but looks at all aspects of health including mental health, sexual health, spiritual health and financial well being. The main event of the year is Health Week which takes place during March. During Health Week there will be plenty of opportunities to try your hand at something new, take a look at your diet and remove the stresses from your life.

The Healthy Campus group are always looking for new people to contribute. If you would like to get involved with Healthy Campus or would like more information, please contact Terry Cooper on ext 8345 or via email to T.Cooper@Sussex.ac.uk

Below is a description of the routes. All these routes start at either the Sport Centre or the Falmer Sports Complex but you can join these routes at any point along the way. You can also change the direction of the routes to change elevation and difficulty.

  • Route One The Red Route (4.3km/2.6 miles) - start at the Falmer Sports Complex, exit out at the front entrance of the Falmer Sports Complex and turn left. Follow the road down to the farm. Go through the gates on the left and go up the steep hill. At the top of the hill go through the gate and approximately 200 metres further turn left through another gate. Follow the path down going along the fence until you come to another gate. After another 200 metres enter the gate and turn right into the trees. At the top of this hill turn left and follow the main path until you come to a gate with a gap in the trees. Cross this and over the gate and follow the path until you come to a fork and take the left hand side. This path will take you to the back of the Russell Building where you can follow the road round to the right passing EDB and going through ARTS and then onto Boiler House Hill. Turn left at the Falmer Sports Complex and finish back at the start.
  • Route Two The Blue Route (3km/1.8 miles) - start at the Sport Centre. Turn right onto Sport Centre Road. At the pedestrian crossing turn right onto the path next to the A27 (towards Lewes). Follow this to the top and turn left and then turn right into Falmer Village. After 20 metres turn left onto the path and follow this all the way through the back of the campus (pass the back of East Slope etc.). Keep left of the path until you come to a gate. Turn left over the gate and enter the field behind Lewes Court. In the distance (at the top of the hill) you will see the Old Observatory (a small round stone structure). Run/walk towards the Observatory and turn left once you are beyond this and aim straight for the edge of the field. Follow the edge of the field down to the gate and turn right going past the back of the Russell Building and follow the small path that takes you to the top of Russells Clump. Follow the cut path that goes diagonally across towards the wooden stumps. Follow the line of these stumps towards the Sport Centre and then turn left as you near the trees and back to the start.
  • Route Three The Yellow Route (1.6km/1 mile) - start at the main entrance to the University. Turn right on the path next to the A27 (towards Lewes). Follow the path to the top and turn left following the road onto campus. At the entrance to the Falmer Sports Complex turn left onto the path which will take you to the top of Boiler House Hill. Go to the bottom of this hill and turn left onto the North/South Road. Turn right at BSMS and follow the road down to the main entrance.
  • Route Four The Purple Route (1.3km/0.8 miles) - start at the Sport Centre. Turn right onto Sport Centre Road. At the pedestrian crossing turn left onto the path. Follow this path through Falmer House and turn diagonally right across Library Square/Fulton Court. Climb the steps to the right of the bridge to get onto the Arts Road. Turn left and follow the road pass EDB and the Nursery. Turn left onto the small path which takes you to the top of Russells Clump. Follow the cut path diagonally across the field towards the wooden stumps. Turn diagonally left towards the Sport Centre crossing Russells Clump.
  • Route Five The White Route (1.7km/1.1 miles) - start at the Sport Centre. Turn left out of the entrance and onto Russells Clump. Aim for Stanmer Park and follow the edge of the first football pitch. Following the perimeter of this pitch until you reach the right hand end of the pitch. At the end of this pitch turn right and follow a diagonal path to the top right end of Russells Clump. Follow the short path until the clearing and turn right heading towards Russells Building. Turn right again going pass the Nursery and EDB and onto Arts Road. Turn right at the junction onto North/South Road and then right opposite BSMS. Follow this path to the Sport Centre.
