Biography
Tamsin studied as both an undergraduate and postgraduate at the University of Sussex, completing her BA in Sociology (1995), MA in Social and Political Thought (1999) and DPhil in Sociology (2009). Her ESRC funded DPhil was a longitudinal qualitative email study of the experiences of lone parents as students at UK universities.
Role
Tamsin is currently a Research Fellow on the EPSRC-funded project "Supporting Shy Users in Pervasive Computing, a 3 year joint project between the Sociology and Informatics departments: http://www.informatics.sussex.ac.uk/research/projects/shyness/Supporting+Shy+Users+in+Pervasive+Computing
She also gives the lectures on the First year undergraduate course, Gender and the life course.
Research
Tamsin's key research interests to date include gender, lone parents, adult and higher education, and mature students.
She facilitated an independent strand of research in the European Social Fund (ESF) funded Equal Brighton and Hove project, bringing together partners from the Universities of Sussex and Brighton alongside the city council and local service providers, to research and address the needs of labour market excluded groups.

More recently her research also focuses on shyness and technology, through her involvement in the Shyness project.
Teaching
Since 2001 Tamsin has taught a wide range of undergraduate courses at the University of Sussex, in Sociology, Gender Studies and Cultural Studies. Teaching has included Sociology of Education, Designing Sociological Research, Themes and Perspectives in Sociology, Comparative Societies (Britain and Japan), Concepts of Culture and Community, What is Gender Studies?, Gender and the life course, and Sociology of Gender. She has also supervised 3rd year sociology projects, and has taught journalism at Kingston University, having trained and practiced in print journalism. She has had articles published in publications including the Guardian. In 2004 she received an award for Excellence in teaching from the University of Sussex.
