Project Name: A product to improve personal comfort in a the public environment
Project Info: Personal space: ‘The region surrounding a person in which they regard psychologically theirs. Most people value their personal space and can feel discomfort, anger or anxiety when they feel their personal space has been encroached.’ Hall, Edward T. (1966).
40% of the current population (25 million) in the UK commute to work on a daily basis; 12.5 million of which are female who spend an average of 47 minutes commuting a day. Most are severely protective of their personal space, whether they are consciously aware of it or not. The increase of population by 2050 will lead to a significant rise in commuters reaching an estimated 15.4 million. Without drastic change or improvement to the current transportation system, the congestion and proximity of people known to use public transport will be overwhelming.
Benefitting the female commuter market, the product is a portable, lightweight and personalised item. With a distinctive and unique appearance, the product has been designed to appear like a regular item of clothing to the general public until a small trigger activates a big change. The new form has been developed to help define the boundaries of the body and provide a sense of enhanced comfort and security in a typically distressing situation.
A small product with a big impact.
Bio: If it is not mad, then it is ordinary.
This has come to define the experimental, creative approach and the conceptual nature of my design work. A great sketch can do many things, it can communicate an idea, but you can never know if a design will work or be effective until you make or test it. Experimenting with an idea gives the freedom to explore and develop a design further until you are satisfied with the outcome or meet a brief; an attitude I believe to have shaped me into the designer I am today. A process I have adopted throughout the course of my time as a student at the University of Sussex.
Throughout my development as a designer, my interests in various areas of design have shown me that any solution is possible if you are brave enough to think of an unusual question. When the parameters of normalcy are pushed beyond the limit, something magical can be created.
Make design deliberate, make it for the user, make it memorable, make it mad and it will never be ordinary.
