Project Name: The Re-Design of Modern Day Low Budget Airline Seating.

Project Info: In the past 10 years aviation has increased in popularity, as of 2006 around 46,000 airports were open to public use in the world, with roughly 14,000 being located in America alone. Due to the massive surge in the industry, low cost airlines became a cheap and easy way to fly, allowing people from lower income backgrounds to reap the benefits of air travel. The surge of the industry mirrored that of the early fast food era, with thousands of bidding customers waiting to receive a cheap product that still provided them with a service. Of course, as usual with a cheaper service comes with a lesser quality outcome, which in the case of airplanes results in uncomfortable seats and a similar amount of free space to that of a shoebox. The companies seek these options of course because it means they can squeeze a higher amount of customers onto a single flight, saving them money and increasing revenue as a bonus. However, I believe the current design of the seats is out dated, and with research as well as creativity I believe I can redesign the standard seat used in these low cost airlines to a much higher standard than what they currently achieve, without making them cost more than the current option. My main aim is to re-design the standard "budget" airplane seat to a state that generates a lot more comfort without compromising the space of others in the same flight.

Bio:  As a designer, drawing has always been what has mattered most to me. Of course with this as a statement, many would question why I have gone into design instead of art – to which my passion for cars answers. Ideally I would love to end up in the automobile industry, whether it is designing how a car shell looks, individual parts to a car or even mechanical attributes that feature on models. I have had this obsession since a young age, and with a lot of personal experience with physically working on real cars in terms of modifications and a like, it has only ever boosted my overall desire to work with cars. The product design degree has really pushed me closer, much closer to getting to a place where I feel I want to be in life. I have learnt massive amounts in design techniques and methods that are only going to provide a positive gain to my current experience. Design to me is inspirational, it is about making something function in a better way than before, solving problems and achieving results that help people in every day life.
