A head-band with integrated airbag head protection for cyclists
An innovative re-design of a cycle helmet, inspired from observing the low
rates of helmet wearing and the high rates of injury. The project aimed to
create an alternative product to existing expanded polystyrene helmets,
which present a number of practical design issues. Research highlighted
problems affecting the level of temperature, comfort and the numerous
reasons why many cyclists choose not to wear a cycle helmet.
The device is incorporated into a head band with airbag and inflator located
at the rear. The product senses rapid deceleration of the cyclist and
deploys the protective airbag in response. Once fully inflated, the airbag
provides protection over the head and face in compliance with the BS EN
1078:2012 safety standard. The airbag protection system and improved
appearance should help to break the barriers and stigmas of wearing a form of
head protection, increasing the wearing rates and reducing the risk of injury. The
head band price is estimated at between £20 and £30 and is targeted at a
wide range of cyclists including children.
