Vientre de Arena: Withered (Short Film)

By: Juan Ley, Elisa Lleras and Belén Santa-Olalla

Withered chronicles an essential day in the life of a woman, whose sole desire is to have a child despite her husband’s unwillingness to become a father. Inspired by Yerma, the acclaimed theatre play by Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, this short-film offers a revisionist take on a timeless story of resentment and opposing desires. The narrative unfolds in a minimalist set-up, in which the performers represent their characters without the help of any dialogue. As a result, all the intensity of the drama is conveyed through their physical actions and extracts from Lorca’s play, which are heard in voice over.

The whole piece is intended for a general audience, whether they are familiar with Lorca’s work or not. The aim of the creators is to immerse the viewer in a unique audiovisual experience, which proposes a new aesthetic approach to a universal theme.
