Fragmented Portraits

In today’s image conscious world we rely on appearance to convey our essence to the world. With so much information and pressure from the media, our identity becomes fractured and confused. We are constantly urged to change ourselves at the drop of a hat, transforming our identity each day. My project shows the portraits of three people taken from a different perspective. Each person seems to mould into the next, these are not simply separate portraits but are unevenly interwoven – much like our socially fragmented image. Claude Cahuns’ exploration of identity through masquerade has been a great influence, prompting thoughts about how we form, control and execute identity. Cindy Sherman’s use of replication to suggest the complex relationship of identification has also been inspirational. This piece should resonate with all ages, particularly the younger generation 16-35. It would work well in a magazine where the themes of the work could be further explored with text, as well as in an open gallery space.
