On Jan 11th 2007 my mother was diagnosed with kidney and heart failure. Before that, she was recovering from two strokes she had last year. My mother and father are completely blind. I documented my mother’s treatment hoping it would help me understand our volatile relationship. Recording my mother’s experiences has allowed me to be a continuous support for her. I feel this privileged and important role has undoubtedly strengthened our relationship.

Stylistically, Martin Parr is the most important photographer to me. Jo Spence, who documented her battle with breast cancer through self portraiture was also intriguing, and when I was scared for my mothers life I found her images comforting, and her bravery inspirational. This work would be most appreciated in a weekend supplement magazine, alongside an article detailing the developments of my mother’s illness. I am satisfied the collection is also personal enough to rest comfortably in my family album. Being suitable for both public and personal appreciation, I feel I have fulfilled the criteria I aimed to achieve.
