Looking At Me, Through Looking At You

Photography is a self-reflective medium where we can increase our self-knowledge. I wished to explore who I was through taking portraits of those close to me. Originally looking at my family and friends’ body language, this project developed into reflecting my relationships with them. As my parents are the biggest part of my life and have played an enormous role in who I am today, especially in terms of relationships, I have focused on them. I wanted to reflect my relationship with them as well as the relationship they have with each other.

The main inspirations and influences on my work have been from the work of Sarah Jones, Hannah Starkey, Rembrandt and others. I found Rembrandt’s use of chiaroscuro influential and the other artists’ construction and subjects interesting. I feel that my work could only been shown in a gallery setting as there is no other adequate outlet for it.
