Parking payments suspended during coronavirus pandemic

Charges for full permit staff parking at the University of Sussex have been suspended for the remainder of the car parking year to 31 August while campus is partially closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

For staff who pay for an annual permit via monthly salary deduction, this means that parking in 2019/20 will be charged up to and including 16 March 2020 (the date when the UK government asked people to start working from home if possible).

Refunds for the period from 17 March to 30 April will be enacted for affected University of Sussex staff in the May 2020 payroll. No payments will be deducted for the period from 1 May to 31 August.

Decisions on the 2020/21 year will be made before the end of August and staff will then receive information about any new arrangements for parking permits.

Director of Finance Allan Spencer says: “This is good news for staff who normally drive to campus.

“While it is of course the latest in a series of decisions with a real cost that we have taken in recent weeks, we believe waiving parking fees at this time is the right thing to do.”

A number of temporary parking arrangements currently apply during the coronavirus pandemic:

  • Any staff who are authorised to be on campus will need to display their current parking permit while parked. If you do not have a current parking permit or pass, with approval from your Head of School or Department you can contact the Transport Office to arrange a temporary permit. More information is available on the Transport website.
  • The transport team in Sussex Estates and Facilities (SEF) recommend that staff with an annual parking permit do not cancel it, even if they are not currently working on campus. Any permit that is cancelled cannot be reissued, and a staff member would then need to reapply later in the year, subject to a waiting list.
  • Due to the limited number of people working on campus during the coronavirus pandemic, parking enforcement on campus will concentrate on ensuring that vehicles are parked safely and considerately. Staff will be informed in advance before normal campus parking enforcement is reinstated.

All student parking permit holders are currently eligible for refunds, and have been since the University moved to online teaching in March.

Normal rules of the road apply on campus and drivers are asked to park responsibly.
