Teaching and Learning

The Teaching and Learning Development Unit (TLDU) works with academics, students and professional service colleagues to develop effective teaching and learning for all. TLDU provides events, courses and resources for staff and students, and works with Schools to encourage innovation in the curriculum and in approaches to teaching. Teaching and Learning Development Events

TLDU organises a programme of events for people with a teaching role. There are short sessions of 1-2 hours right up to whole day workshops and days and times vary to allow as many as possible to participate.

Preparing to Teach

Preparing to Teach is an online course that is open to all at the University. It will familiarise you with the structures of Sussex and Higher Education in the UK and help prepare you for your first teaching sessions.

PGCertHE

The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (PGCertHE) is a professional qualification of 60 Masters credits (600 hours nominal study time). At most UK universities such a qualification is a requirement during the probationary period of a new member of academic Faculty. Spare places on the Sussex PGCertHE are available to postdoctoral research staff with a teaching role. It is normally taken as a two year part-time programme.

The programme consists of working with an individual advisor to plan workshops, activities, reading and developmental observations relevant to the role and experience of each participant. Assessment is based on work-based teaching activities so an absolute minimum of 20 hours teaching per year of programme is required. Your experience must cover all aspects of teaching including learning design, teaching, assessment and feedback, and supporting and guiding students. Successful completion requires a portfolio of assessed work and also gives Fellowship status of the Higher Education Academy.
