Occupational Health

The Occupational Health service offers advice on health, safety and well-being at work. The service works to prevent work related ill health; reduce risks to health from occupational hazards; and promote health and safety.

The service covers a wide range of activities including:

  • pre-employment health screening
  • assessment of fitness to work after an illness or injury
  • management and self referrals; advice to staff and managers regarding sickness, absence or serious illness
  • regular health surveillance checks or medicals depending on the nature of work carried out
  • work related vaccinations
  • referrals for counselling
  • health promotion
  • training

The Occupational Health service is provided by an independent professional organisation called the Robens Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. They are contracted to the University to offer advice and support on work-related health issues. Individual occupational health records or reports are confidential and staff have access to any information kept under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988.

The team consists of qualified nurses and a sessional doctor, who have specialised in Occupational Health. Barbara Baggott - Senior OH Adviser, Anwen Hughes - OH Adviser, Dr Samantha Phillips - Occupational Health Consultant Physician.

Psychology and Counselling Services

Psychological and Counselling Services (PCS) offer confidential individual and group therapy for students, but also a consultation and referral service for staff. PCS also offer one-off debrief sessions for staff that have experienced a traumatic event during the course of their work. The unit also coordinates specialist groups for anxiety management and eating problems, and a substance misuse programme.

Via the PCS website, you can also access the CALM Relief series of interactive assessment / relief tools, covering topics such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Drink and drug wise

Health, Safety and Wellbeing Office

The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Office is resposible for advising on all aspects of health and safety in the University. In particular, these duties include:

  • The co-ordination and reviewing of University health and safety management systems
  • Facilitating the implementation of the University Health and Safety Plan
  • To provide an annual report on health and safety and for University Council
  • To monitor and administer actions arising from the Health, Safety and Environment Committee
  • To advise the University on health and safety legislation
  • To liase with external authorities in relation to matters of health and safety.
  • To be responsible for arranging appropriate health and safety training courses
