Sussex has a proud tradition of generating critical research on some of the most significant developments shaping global politics, economics, culture, science and technology. Ranging from the part that it played in fostering the transition to a post-apartheid South Africa through its position as a centre of excellence in migration and developing country education research, to its expertise in low-carbon technology development and transfer to the developing world, Sussex has from its inception participated in global transformations as well as analysing them.
Global Transformations research encompasses existing and emerging research interests that range across the humanities, arts and sciences, some of its key foci include:
- the long and short term causes and consequences of, and adaptations to, climate change;
- the analysis of, and generation of advice concerning, the shifting balance of economic power between the West and China and South Asia;
- the further development and international transfer of energy solutions;
- the development of responses to food crises in the poorest parts of the world;
- the histories and futures of colonial and postcolonial cultural interactions;
- the effects of international political and trading alliances;
- the past and future of both humanitarian and security interventions;
- analysis to improve policy and practice in education, which recognises both the global and the local in enhancing development.
