Services

The Research Development team is responsible for the dissemination of research funding intelligence and for providing support to the Schools and their faculty in the development of research bids (funders including Research Councils, Charities, Government, EU and overseas bodies). They are the University's principal contact point with our principal research funders and are also responsible for the costing, pricing, negotiation and acceptance of research awards and contracts other than those with business. The team also provides expertise and support in matters of research governance and ethics.

The Research Governance office is responsible for supporting the on-going development and implementation of University good research governance and University policy and guidance relating to all aspects of research governance.

The Research Finance team is responsible for accounting for the income and expenditure on the University's research & related activity, for the contract management of awarded projects, for ensuring that the terms of funding are complied with and that expenditure is maximised within budgets.

Sussex has around 900 DPhil students and 200 early career research staff. Sussex is committed to developing the next generation of researchers to fulfil their full potential, and recognising their contribution both within their own disciplines as well as to the distinctive inter-disciplinary research environment at Sussex.  The Doctoral School is a highly distinctive development at Sussex which will coordinate and enhance the support provided to postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers within their immediate discipline. The School seeks to enable postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers to feel fully integrated as members of the University's wider research community.

The Business & Enterprise team is responsible for the University's interactions with business, and in particular in relation to research and development activities. They are reponsible for the support of all Technology Strategy Board applications and for activities involving European and regional development funds. The team includes the responsibility for entrepreneurship development, particularly targeted at students (UG, PGT, PGR) and postdoctoral researchers. The team is also responsible for the marketing and communication of the Univeversity's research and enterprise activities (in conjunction with the Comms & Marketing Division), and for organising relevant events.

The Contracts & IP team is responsible for providing contractual support, advice, drafting, review and negotiation to the other teams in R & E and to individual researchers. They are also responsible for the management and administration of the University's portfolio of intellectual property, in particular working closely with the Sussex Innovation Centre
