Strong coupling between ions and photons can only be achieved by shrinking the cavity volume. This requires careful integration with the miniaturized trap.
Novel techniques for the miniaturization of the cavity mode volume will be tested in close collaboration with industry, using mirrors with small curvature or end facets of optical fibres.
Different fabrication techniques for the linear ion-trap will be tested, with micro-fabrication promising the smallest trap sizes. The team will profit from nanotechnology expertise in the department of engineering at the University of Sussex.
