Course description
Course outline
The course examines the biochemical and anatomical bases of selected clinical disorders; it considers drug models (both animal and human) developed to understand the clinical condition and approaches to treatment, and examines the relationship between biochemical effects and behavioural and cognitive changes. Topics covered include anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the major symptoms in the behavioural, cognitive and emotional domain of anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the biochemical changes that occur in the brain in anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of how such biochemical changes relate to symptoms of the disorder and how available treatments can work to reduce the symptoms or treat the disorder.
4. Discuss explanations for the causes of anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.
