Biography

Sussex University: Psychology Home Page

I came to Sussex in 1977 to study for a doctorate and have been here ever since, apart from one year as a Sloan Pre-doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin and two years lecturing at the University of Reading. I have been employed successively as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, a New Blood Lecturer, a Reader and, since 1999, as a Professor.

My primary research interests are in psycholinguistics, and in particular inference and anaphor resolution in text comprehension, and nonsyntactic influences in sentence processing. I am also interested in belief bias effects in reasoning and in the relation between language development and the developing theory of mind.

I currently teach on the following modules:

Cognitive Psychology (year 2)

Linear Models in Statistics (M-level)

Advanced Research Methods in Psychology (M-level)

I convene

Linear Models in Statistics (M-level)

Research Internship (M-Level)

I am Programme Director for

MRes Psychological Methods
