Barny completed his undergraduate degree and PhD at Imperial College London, the latter under the guidance of the much missed Dr Joachim Steinke. Between 2007 and 2012 he worked as a PDRA at University of Reading with Howard Colquhoun and Wayne Hayes on several large, international grants in collaboration with Stuart Rowan (Now at Chicago), Michael Mackay (Delaware) and Fraser Stoddart (Northwestern). In 2012 he was appointed to a permanent position in the Reading School of Pharmacy before moving to the University of Sussex in September 2017.

Barny is interested in the developement of responsive polymeric and supramolecular materials. Current projects include synthesising materials that can heal themselves when broken or debond two surfaces on demand, as well as producing materials that are conductive or can be used in 2D and 3D printing.
