Ishrat is currently doing her doctoral research at Development Studies, University of Sussex. She received the Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue her PhD on women’s empowerment and sexual agency within Muslim marriage in Dhaka

Prior to her PhD, she did her PGD in Gender Studies from the University of Hull, the UK with Erasmus Mundus scholarship. She joined the academia later in 2012 as a core faculty at the Dept of Gender Studies in the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. 

Ishrat started her career at ActionAid Bangladesh, the UK based development organization in 2009 as a Research Associate and later served the Social Development & Economic Justice sector. Before starting her doctoral journey, she was involved with Promundo US (Mencare Project), NWO-WOTRO (Dutch Govt funded SRHR research), UNDP, WHO, CMMS and contributed in multiple research related to gender and development.
