Dr Maples has worked in Higher Education for over 25 years as a lecturer, senior lecturer, academic manager and academic consultant, and is a Senior Fellow of the HEA. She began her academic career with a BA in World Arts and Cultures (UCLA, USA) and a PhD dissertation on environmental activism (Cultural Studies, Birmingham University, UK). In 2016, Dr Maples gained an MA in Online and Distance Education (Open University, UK), consolidating her expertise in blended learning following 15 years as Senior Lecturer and Staff Tutor with the Open University. She is the co-author of the popular Good Essay Writing: A Social Sciences Guide, 5th edn. (2017, Sage). In 2017, Dr Maples founded the educational project 'The University of Us', bringing local people together to study open, online courses in an informal environment.

Dr Maples joined Sussex University in 2016 as a part-time Foundation tutor on the 'Academic Development' module and currently teaches both 'Academic Development' (Social Sciences) and 'Global Issues'.

Community and Business

Dr Maples is active in a variety of community projects and activities, foremost amongst them, 'The Universiy of Us' -- a local educational project bringing geographically proximate learners together to study open, online courses -- which she founded. She is a co-owner in OVESCO (which develops ecologically-informed community energy projects) and of the Lewes Rooks Community Football Club, where she also ocassionally volunteers on match days. She is a founding member of the Brighton Beachcombers Softball Club, and continues to play and coach the team.
