Dr Matthew Evans is a Lecturer in Law, Politics and Sociology.

Prior to joining the University of Sussex in 2016 he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Political Studies (from 2014 to 2016) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he remains attached as a Visiting Researcher.

Matthew completed his PhD at the University of York's Centre for Applied Human Rights and also taught at York from 2010 to 2014.

He is the author of Transformative Justice: Remedying Human Rights Violations Beyond Transition (published in 2018) and editor of Transitional and Transformative Justice: Critical and International Perspectives (published in 2019) both in Routledge's Transitional Justice Series. He has also published peer-reviewed articles in leading social, legal and political studies journals (including International Politics, the Journal of Human Rights, the Journal of Human Rights Practice and Social and Legal Studies) and has contributed to the Social and Legal Studies Blog and to the Thesis Whisperer.
