Biography

Matthew has taught across the primary phase for over 20 years, including 12 years in primary headship.  Matthew now works as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Sussex, teaching and supporting trainees on the Primary B.A, Primary PGCE and M.A (Education) programmes. Matthew also works freelance as an Educational Consultant, providing leadership and management support, leadership coaching and curriculum advice to schools. 

Main Areas of Expertise

Matthew has a particular interest in schools in school culture, schools in challenging contexts, and schools causing concern.  During his time in school leadership, he has been responsible for improving the performance of three schools, all of which have moved upward through OfSTED gradings to good or outstanding.  Matthew has led and managed the amalgamation of an infant and junior school, opened a brand new primary school – one of the largest in Sussex, and has led schools through conversion from local authority to sponsored academy.

Matthew has a strong interest in curriculum design and innovation in the primary years and has implemented a number of innovative curricular models in a range of schools.
