Project title: Managing Neoliberal Europe

My project explores the history of public management within European institutions and its role in driving 'neoliberal' integration since the 1990s. New procedures and mechanisms like the Open Method of Coordination and, more recently, the European Semester have attempted to apply managerial techniques to the problem of coordinating the policies of European member states. I ask what role did a public management movement play in reinventing integration under a banner of 'European governance', and what were the political economic consequences of this for an emerging European polity.
