My research focuses on directorial practices and procedures in contemporary European theatre. Through a series of publications on work by Thomas Ostermeier, Katie Mitchell, Nicolas Stemann, Simon Stephens, and Sebastian Nübling, I have sought to reveal the interdependence of director’s theatre across borders, countering the critical and scholarly tendency to isolate ‘national’ forms and styles. Throughout I draw on practitioner perspectives, most recently as editor of four films and a book on The Theatre of Katie Mitchell (Digital Theatre+ and Routledge, 2019) involving the designer Alex Eales and the director of photography Leo Warner, alongside scholarly interventions. My experience on the Birkbeck MFA in Theatre Directing and as a freelance practitioner in venues including the RSC, the Almeida theatre and Opera Holland Park gives me a vantage point from which to decode working practices, and I am currently completing a monograph on the theatre director Katie Mitchell (Routledge, 2020). I am also part of the British Academy-funded research group exploring 'Contemporary European Drama in Translation on the British Stage: Exploring its absence in the context of Brexit'.
