Biography

Dr Sally Xiaojin Chen joined the University of Sussex in September 2015 as a Lecturer in Journalism. Sally has been closely involved with Chinese media and modern Chinese culture both in the industry and in academic research. Sally was awarded a PhD in Sociology, Media and Cultural Studies from King’s College London. Before pursuing her PhD, Sally worked as an investigative journalist for South Media Group in China, where she gained extensive experience writing feature reports for magazines, weekly newspapers, and daily newspapers. Sally has carried out research in various fields, in particular Internet research, China studies, collective action and democracy, citizen engagement, and activism in China. She is also interested in researching media in transition in the digital age, focusing on UK media, Chinese media, and the issues around global journalism.
