Dr Spyros Skarvelis-Kazakos, MIET MIEEE FHEA

Dr Skarvelis-Kazakos is a Lecturer in Power Electronics at the University of Sussex since July 2015. He is a member of the Dynamics, Control and Vehicle (DCV) Research Group. Prior to joining the University of Sussex, he was a Lecturer in Sustainable Electrical Power Engineering at the University of Greenwich. He has successfully attracted research funding from the TSB / Innovate UK and commercial sources (Arup). The main focus of his research is smart grids and renewable energy integration.

He is the main and second supervisor of three PhD students and has also managed a Research Fellow and a Research Assistant. He has participated as lead user, co-investigator and researcher in international multidisciplinary EU projects on biofuels for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators (Interreg Ecotec 21), control and grid integration of Electric Vehicles (FP7 MERGE) and testing an intelligent control system he had developed (FP7 DERri).

Before his first academic post, he completed his PhD thesis at Cardiff University, under the supervision of Dr. Liana Cipcigan and Prof. Nick Jenkins. He also has experience working in consultancy (Garrad Hassan – now DNV GL) and research centres (Centre for Renewable Energy Systems [CRES] in Greece), where he worked on the FP6 project EU-DEEP (The birth of a EUropean Distributed EnErgy Partnership).
