Biography

I am a Doctoral Researcher in the School of English at Sussex University. My thesis investigates the role of race, childhood and dreams in 19th & 20th C. newspaper comic strips. Working between Literature, Visual Arts, and Material Archiving, my research aims to explore how children’s comics followed a popular trend which reimaged space, place and body in early twentieth century children’s literature.

Before my PhD, I worked in Primary Education, in both mainstream and SEN schools. I am passionate about open access to education, representation in visual arts and material culture, and comics. I am a co-curater of Graphic Brighton, an annual comics creator and academic conference. I also enjoy Junior-level coding and making interactive stories for learners, such as: https://ellejane-x23.github.io/code-first-project/ .
