Research interests 

  • Social work and political conflict
  • Reform processes in health and social care (particularly in post-conflict societies)
  • Adult mental health and intellectual disability services in the context of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (particularly re. legal capacity and community living)
  • Co-production with service users in research, policy and practice.

Rea is one of the initiators of the research network 'Social work and extreme events' (SWEE). The network includes social work researchers from countries affected by political conflict and/or natural disasters who explore these themes in their research. The network aims to improve knowledge and services offered to social work service users in areas affected by such extreme events. It currently includes members from Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Slovenia and Sri Lanka.
