Lucy Baker is a research fellow in the Centre for Innovation and Energy Demand in the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex and a visiting fellow at the Energy Research Centre, University of Cape Town. Between 2013 and 2015 Lucy worked in the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex as a research fellow on an ESRC-funded project, Rising Powers and the Low Carbon Transition in Sub-Saharan Africa. Lucy’s areas of research include: the political economy of energy; socio-technical transitions; and low carbon development in low & middle income countries.
Lucy completed her PhD in The political economy of socio-technical transitions in South Africa’s electricity sector in 2012, from the University of East Anglia, UK. Prior to joining academia she worked for ten years in the fields of environment, development and human rights as a policy officer, campaigner and fund-raiser with non-governmental organisations Amnesty International, Oxfam and Bretton Woods Project. Lucy has worked in Africa, Asia and Latin America. A native speaker of English, she is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French. She holds an MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies and an MA in Hispanic Studies and French from the University of Edinburgh.
