Beth Richards
Doctoral Tutor (Art History)

My PhD thesis is entitled, The East India Company’s engagement with Indian dress in England, c. 1740-1830. This topic incorporates my main areas of academic interest: eighteenth century portraiture and the role of dress and jewellery - alongside the impact of travel - within these works. Specifically, I am interested in the direct relationship between the material object, its depicted visual culture and the gendered implications that are generated on both a regional level - through research into a group of specific Sussex Nabobs - and on a national level within the Country house environment.
