Dr Francesco Ventrella holds degrees in Art History from ‘La Sapienza’ University of Rome (BA, MA) and the University of Leeds (PhD). In 2006 he was Postgraduate Visiting Student at the School of Women’s Studies, University of Utrecht, and Visiting Fellow at the CentreCATH, University of Leeds. He was the recipient of the British Academy and Accademia dei Lincei Postgraduate Research Bursary for a project on Women Connoisseurs and the Translation of Art History (2007). Francesco has also been a member of the ‘Writing Art History’ Research Forum at the Courtauld Institute (2007-10) and is the former editor of the cultural theory journal parallax (2008-2011).

Francesco joined the Art History Department at Sussex in 2012, and came back the following year as the Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow, working on a research project entitled 'Connoisseurial Intimacies: 1870-1930' (2013-2016).
