Biography

Dr. Sambit Bhattacharyya is a University Lecturer in economics at the Department of Economics, University of Sussex. He received his PhD in Economics from the Australian National University. Prior to joining Sussex he was a Post-doctoral Fellow in Economics at the University of Oxford. His research interests are in the areas of development economics, economic history, political economy, and the Indian Economy. He is the author of Growth Miracles and Growth Debacles: Exploring Root Causes explores the causes of long term growth and development around the globe. He also published widely in the abovementioned areas including in European Economic Review, Journal of Comparative Economics, Oxford Economic Papers, Oxford Handbook of Poverty and Society, Australian Economic History Review, and Economic Record.
 
Dr. Bhattacharyya's research featured in newspaper reports in the Australian, Times of India, The Economic Times, The Indian Express and others. He recently appeared in several radio programmes including in Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National to comment on the Indian Economy. His work on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was mentioned in the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India Report 'MGNREGA Sameeksha' and the Prime Minister of India's speech.
