I read Mathematics at King’s College, Cambridge, before coming to  COGS at the University of Sussex in 1995 to study an MSc in Knowledge-Based Systems. I then stayed at Sussex to do a doctorate in Computational Neuroscience and Robotics in the Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics (CCNR), an interdisciplinary research group at the interface of Neuroscience and Computer Science. After my doctorate, I stayed at Sussex, firstly as temporary teaching and research faculty and gaining a PGcertHE, before getting a lectureship in 2004. I deferred the lectureship till 2007 to do a postdoc  in the CCNR on insect-inspired visual learning strategies. I started my lectureship in 2007 (COGS had by then become Informatics) and was appointed to Senior Lecturer in 2011, Reader in 2014 and Professor in 2017.

I am Professor of Biorobotics in the Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems Research group, a member of the Sussex Insect Navigation Group and Sussex Neuroscience and co-director of the Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics
