Tom Ottway
Doctoral Tutor (Media and Film)

Tom Ottway is an artist, lecturer and doctoral researcher in the School of Media Film & Music at the University of Sussex.

He has spent many years teaching English as a second or additional language and his experience in this field, especially the ‘outsider’ informs much of his research. In 2005 his Artist Residency in Groningen, Netherlands for PAVLOV Media Lab, was a residency about being a foreign resident, which transformed an empty house into an auto-ethnographic ‘album’ of music.

His current practice-based PhD is entitled Sonic Home & Com-positon explores how ‘home’ is constructed, experienced and mediated, principally through sound (voice, memory, ‘audio-auto-ethnography’ music, field recordings, sonic art, or a combination of these) in relation to other senses. He is currently researching (co-) creating multiple forms and formats, including gaming, VR and AR, ‘documusic’ (see Cathy Lane) and ‘soundings’ in an attempt to help capture the sense of home/non-home.

He was awarded a SAGE Research Hive Scholarship at the University of Sussex in 2016-17, and participated in the interdisciplinary booksprint on the subject ‘Home’.
