Biography

Dr Feras Alkabani is a Lecturer and Co-Director of the Middle East and North Africa Centre (MENACS) at the University of Sussex. Feras obtained his BA in English Language and Literature from Damascus University and went on to pursue his postgraduate studies at the University of Sussex. Feras has an MA in English (Critical Theory) and a PhD in English (Comparative Literature).

Feras has taught on a wide range of interdisciplinary modules in Literature, History, Language Studies and Linguistics, International Development and Anthropology at various universities and HE institutions in the UK and abroad, including the University of Sussex, King's College London, Lancaster University, CAPA London and Damascus University. 

Born into a Damascene family of expatriates in Dubai, Feras has lived, studied and worked in the UAE, Syria, Lebanon and the UK and now calls Brighton home. 

Feras has conducted interdisciplinary research in multiple languages and published in prestigious academic journals; his monograph, Richard Burton, T.E. Lawrence and the Culture of Homoerotic Desire, is going to be published next year (2020) by I.B. Tauris (Bloomsbury) London.

  • Academic Reviewer for the BRISMES Conference: I have reviewed submissions for the BRISMES Conference in 2014 and the upcoming one in 2020, where I also sit on the Programme Committee. 
  • Academic Reviewer at the Victorian Review (VR) Journal: I have reviewed an academic artilce on Sir Richard Burton for the VR Journal.
  • Academic Reviewer at the Journal of British Studies (JBS): I am currently reviewing a new monograph on T.E. Lawrence for the  JBS.
  • Academic Reviewer at the Mashriq & Mahjar Journal: I am currently reviewing a literary article in Comparative Literature for the Journal
  • Arabic Poetry on Ceramics: I have been working with Carole Bennett, a ceramicist based in Sussex, on curating and selecting Andulsian Arabic poetry for her art collections and exhibitions.
