Prof Carr studied biological sciences at Norwich (University of East Anglia) and subsequently became a PhD student in the laboratory of Paul Nurse when Paul was at the University of Sussex. It was here that he developed his enthusiasm for genetics and model organisms. Prof Carr now runs a laboratory studying the mechanism of the DNA damage and DNA replication checkpoints and how failed replication forks are restored. Professor Carr was instrumental in establishing  the MRC Genome Damage and Stability Centre (GDSC) at the University of Sussex, which is one of the world-leading centres researching into the mechanisms that maintain genome stability. Prof Carr is now director of the Centre.
